Daft Punk have shared the trailer for their 2003 anime film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar.
The trailer drops ahead of the one-night-only event on 12 December, which will bring the film to the big screen at over 800 cinemas across the globe.
The film – directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi, under the supervision of veteran Japanese manga artist Leiji Matsumoto – was produced as a visual companion to the duo’s 2001 album ‘Discovery’ – which is certified Gold in the US, 2x Platinum in the UK and 3x Platinum in France. It’s also one of Euronews Culture’s Best European Albums of the 21st Century.
Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar has been remastered in 4K and includes an additional six of Daft Punk’s most iconic music videos directed by the likes of Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Roman Coppola, and Warren Fu.
The dialogue-free film is a space opera that follows the story of the Crescendolls, an abducted alien band, as they fight against an evil human with a dark and nefarious plan.
The scenario was devised by the French duo behind Daft Punk – Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – and the film only received a limited theatrical run in 2003 after its Cannes Film Festival premiere that year, in the Directors’ Fortnight section.
Since then, it has only been issued on home media.
Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar will 5creen at global theatre5 on 12 December. Ticket5 are available now at interstella5555film.com.
