Venice Carnival 2025, celebrating the 300th anniversary of Casanova’s birth, opened with a nautical parade of more than 100 boats along the Grand Canal.

The Venice Carnival 2025 officially kicked off on Sunday with the traditional Venetian nautical parade. More than a hundred boats piloted by masked rowers paraded along the Grand Canal.

Leading the procession was the ‘Pantegana’, a giant papier-mâché rat, which exploded into biodegradable confetti near the Rialto Bridge.

This year’s theme is the 300th birthday of Casanova. Prizes were awarded to the best decorated boats. A bee-themed crew won the first prize.

According to the local authorities in Venice, the carnival is expected to attract around three million visitors.
